Established in 1994 and held annually on the fourth Saturday in September, this celebration brings out thousands of volunteers to help restore and improve public lands around the country. NPLD is also a “Fee-Free Day” —one of only five days a year when entrance fees are waived at national parks and other public lands.

What are public lands?Public lands include national parks, monuments, wildlife refuges, forests, grasslands, marine sanctuaries, lakes, and reservoirs, as well as state, county, and city parks that are managed by federal, state, and local governments. In 2021, the BLM coordinated 142 NPLD events, representing one-quarter of all NPLD events nationwide.
