WEBJan 21, 2022 · Summary. For a function f defined on an interval [a, b], the average rate of change of f on [a, b] is the quantity. AV [ a, b] = f(b) − f(a) b − a. The value of AV [ a, b] = f ( b) − f ( a) b − a tells us how much the function rises or falls, on average, for each additional unit we move to the right on the graph.
