WEBI've been reading up a bit on the advantages and disadvantages of Energy-Efficient Ethernet (EEE) / 802.3az. Most switches that support it, so far seem not to enable it by default. I've enabled it for testing on one switch that mostly feeds Ubiquiti access points to see what happens during idle times.
WEBIn computer networking, Energy-Efficient Ethernet (EEE) is a set of enhancements to twisted-pair, twinaxial, backplane, and optical fiber Ethernet physical-layer variants that reduce power consumption during periods of low data activity.

WEBEnergy Efficient Ethernet (EEE) is an IEEE 802.3az standard that is designed to reduce power consumption in Ethernet networks during idle periods. EEE can be enabled on devices that support low power idle (LPI) mode. Such devices can save power by entering LPI mode during periods of low utilization.
WEBThe switch supports IEEE 802.3az Energy-Efficient Ethernet (EEE) which can detect when a connected computer is shut down or when there is no Ethernet traffic, and will proceed to power down the idle port, saving a substantial amount of power.
WEBENERGY EFFICIENT. Energy Efficient Ethernet (IEEE 802.3az) standard, which reduces energy consumption when there is light traffic on an active port or when there is no link or no activity detected. PLUG-AND-PLAY. No software to install. No configuration needed. Zero maintenance required. SILENT OPERATION.
WEBFirst Broadcom IEEE 802.3az Energy Efficient Ethernet™(EEE)-compliant switch; Integrated on-chip uC to manage low-power modes automatically; Saves more than 70 percent power during EEE mode compared to non-EEE mode; Individual ports can automatically detect when short cable lengths are used to scale power appropriately
WEBThe Aruba Instant On 1830 Switch Series has Energy Efficient Ethernet (EEE), and is compliant with 802.3az standard requirements to save energy during periods of low data activity. Energy-efficient cooling includes variable speed fans operating only at the speed necessary to maintain operating temperature to reduce excess noise and power ...
