In ANOVA terminology, most Gage R&R studies have an ANOVA type data structure. A variance component analysis can easily be done in most software packages. The individual variance components provide estimates of error, operator and "true" product variance .

It can be directly measured on a paper tracing by counting the number of small blocks on the tracing, each representing 0.04 seconds, or 40 milliseconds. The RR interval can also be calculated from the heart rate which is the number of heart beats, that is R waves, counted over a minute, that is 60 seconds.
