Essex County is located in the northeastern corner of Vermont, with the Vermont counties of Orleans and Caledonia to the west, the New Hampshire counties of Coos and Grafton to the east, and Canada as its northern neighbor. Essex County, Vermont was formed in 1798 , from a portion of Caledonia County, but it was not fully organized until 1799 , at which time Lunenburgh and Brunswick were established as half shires of Essex County.
